Modernising the largest property services provider network on time and with 40% cost savings.

The Client

A leading property services provider (SIC Code 68310) operates more than 1200 high street branches nationwide under 75+ trading brands to offer a wide range of property services, including residential sales, conveyancing and planning. The organisation relies on fast, secure and scalable connectivity to power its operations across the UK.

The Challenge

The organisation operated across two major business estates, with a combined network of 1,200+ branches split over two entirely different infrastructures.

One operated approximately 500+ sites on an SD-WAN environment, while the second operated around 700+ sites on MPLS. This dual topology created a fragmented set-up, resulting in multiple VRFs, inconsistent routing paths and duplicated data-centre access points.

As a result, deploying modern applications, enabling SaaS services, enforcing security policies or even implementing simple network changes became complex and time-consuming.

Lack of resiliency in part of the estate meant that roughly 10% of branches experienced outages due to single circuit dependency. With no LTE backup, branches lost connectivity entirely when circuits failed.

At the same time, the majority of routers, LAN switches and WiFi access points across the estate were approaching or beyond end-of-life, raising security concerns and limiting the potential for digital transformation.

Finally, the cost of maintaining two separate networks had become high. The organisation needed a unified approach – one resilient network that would simplify operations, modernise the estate and reduce cost. These converging challenges led the organisation to launch a tender.

Why the organisation went to tender

A formal tender process was initiated for four key reasons:

  • A fragmented network topology – The network design had become complex and restrictive. Multiple VRFs, fragmented routing paths and split architectures made the environment clunky and restrictive. The business found rolling out modern SaaS platforms, software or security tools challenging due to the inconsistent infrastructure.
  • Lack of resilience – Single-circuit branches, with no LTE backup, meant outages were unavoidable. At least, one in ten sites experienced connectivity issues in a typical period an unacceptable state for a national, customer facing estate.
  • Multiple support models – Part of the overall support model relied on outsourced service partners whose support structure created long change windows, slow SLAs and no flexibility. The organisation couldn’t make basic changes, couldn’t adjust the MPLS estate and couldn’t scale effectively. In contrast, the part of organisation’s environment supported by Ampito was far easier to manage, resulting in a disjointed overall model.
  • End-of-life technology and escalating cost – A large proportion of network devices were end-of-life, so a refresh was unavoidable. Maintaining separate networks across multiple providers resulted in high costs, with no efficiency.

The Sourcing / RFP Process

The organisation launched a competitive RFP that included the incumbent provider, Ampito being one of those providers. The scope covered both estates, meaning every supplier had to propose a solution that refreshed and unified all 1,252 branches.

The programme needed to be completed by the end of 2025, driven initially by BT’s proposed copper withdrawal dates and positioned as a precursor to a wider End User Computing (EUC) transformation programme. This meant the entire estate had to be migrated within roughly 12 months – a timeline most major providers struggled to commit to.

The RFP was a three-month process concluding in August 2023. It was aggressive, detailed and required rapid iterations from all bidders. The organisation held direct negotiations with technology vendors including HPE, Cisco and Juniper.

How Ampito Delivered It

Ampito delivered the new unified network through a modernised architecture built on HPE Silver Peak for SD-WAN and HPE Aruba for all LAN and Wi-Fi. This created a single, cohesive infrastructure across all 1,200+ sites.

Silver Peak SD-WAN provided intelligent path selection, secure local breakout, centralised orchestration and dynamic traffic optimisation unlocking cloud adoption and enabling SaaS platforms to be deployed without the constraints of MPLS.

The LAN and Wi-Fi estate was completely refreshed with HPE Aruba switches and Wi-Fi 6 access points, managed centrally through Aruba Central. This delivered corporate and guest Wi-Fi across every site, improved in-branch experience and provided a foundation for advanced digital services such as CCTV, digital signage and customer engagement tools.

Ampito deployed LTE backup to branches that previously had no resilience, eliminating the widespread impact of outages and giving every branch a dependable failover option.

By using an agile network of specialist partners, Ampito delivered 99% of SDWAN deployments within the timeline and ensured the Wi-Fi replacement programme would complete by year-end, all aligned with the original copper withdrawal deadlines.

“Ampito delivered a far superior network design. Their architecture simplified everything, future-proofed the estate and gave us the flexibility we needed. They simplified our entire network architecture and modernised 1,200+ branches within an incredibly tight timeline. The result is a unified, resilient platform that finally allows us to move at the speed the business needs.” – said Group Technology Director, Property Services Provider.

Why Ampito Was Chosen

Ampito was selected as the organisation’s preferred partner for four key reasons:

  1. Superior Network Design – Ampito ranked number one for network architecture. Their understanding of SD-WAN, multi-carrier connectivity, routing, and simplification of large-scale environments was described as superior. They offered flexibility across carriers, support models and deployment approaches, which none of the other bidders could match.
  2. Agility and Delivery Capability – Ampito’s delivery model leveraged highly specialised UK partners capable of deploying SD-WAN, coordinating with BT, completing site surveys, handling communications and meeting tight completion timelines. These partners were significantly more agile and cost-effective than the large national providers. This delivery model was a decisive factor, as Ampito demonstrated they could complete the rollout faster than any major competitor.
  3. Cost Advantage – Ampito’s proposal was 40–50% more cost-effective than the other providers while still offering the technically strongest design. This combination of best design and best cost was unique among all bidders.
  4. Flexible and cost-effective support model – Ampito offered a support model where the organisation stayed involved in network policy and governance, while Ampito took care of day-to-day support. This gave the organisation a simpler, more flexible way of working and it wasn’t something they could have achieved in a cost-effective way with the incumbent network provider.

“Ampito delivered a far superior network design. Their architecture simplified everything, future-proofed the estate and gave us the flexibility we needed. They simplified our entire network architecture and modernised 1,252 branches within an incredibly tight timeline. The result is a unified, resilient platform that finally allows us to move at the speed the business needs.” – Group Technology Director, Property Services Provider.

Key Statistics

  • High Availability – 99% up time.
  • Tight deadline – 1,252 branches modernised in 12 months for network (SDWAN), LAN and Wi-Fi.
  • Reduced Total Cost of Ownership – 40% more cost-effective than competitors, improving ROI.

Summary

The organisations’ network topology was clunky, restrictive and fragmented, with outsourced support, long SLAs, no LTE resiliency, the majority of equipment was end-of-life and expensive operationally. They needed a partner that could unify the estate, reduce complexity, modernise the infrastructure and deliver everything within an extremely tight window.

Ampito has now delivered a unified, resilient, modern network across the organisations’ entire 1,252-branch estate, enabling a consistent way of working, improved uptime, reduced cost and a platform ready for the next phase of digital transformation.
