A leading university is the largest in the United Kingdom & Northern Ireland and is a proud member of the prestigious Russell Group. With approximately 30,000 students, 4,000 staff and a large community of researchers and visiting academics, the university depends on a robust and reliable IT infrastructure to support teaching, research and campus services.

The Challenge

As digital services, research platforms and connected devices continued to grow across campus, the university sought to modernise its network infrastructure to improve visibility, simplify operations and provide a scal-able foundation for future innovation.
At the same time, the university was expanding internationally with the launch of a new campus in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India. This expansion required a secure and reliable technology environment capable of connecting the new facility seamlessly with the university’s global systems and services..

  • Modernising Campus Infrastructure

As the university’s digital services expanded, the existing networking model became increasingly complex to manage. Deploying or modifying services often required engineers to manually configure individual switches across the network, a process that could take days or even weeks to complete.

In a large university environment where thousands of users rely on the network daily, this manual approach limited agility and placed significant operational demands on the IT team. The university needed a scalable solution that could reduce the engineering effort required to maintain the network while enabling faster service deployment and greater scalability as campus demands continued to grow.

  • Supporting Global Expansion

Alongside its campus modernisation efforts in UK&NI, the university was also preparing to launch its international campus in GIFT City, India. This introduced new technology requirements, including the need to establish secure connectivity between international locations while ensuring that sensitive research data and institutional systems remained fully protected. The university also needed to deploy enterprise-grade infrastructure in a new geographic market, which required careful coordination of global procurement, logistics and regulatory compliance. Ensuring that the new campus could deliver the same secure and reliable digital experience as UK&NI, added further complexity to the project.

How Ampito Delivered It

Ampito worked closely with the University to design and implement a modern, secure and scalable infrastructure across both the UK&NI campus and the new international location.

UK&NI – Across the UK&NI campus, Ampito deployed advanced switching and network management solutions from Extreme Networks. This modernised architecture provides improved performance and greater operational visibility, enabling the university’s IT teams to monitor network activity more effectively and identify potential issues more quickly.

The new environment simplifies day-to-day network management while providing the scalability required to support the university’s growing digital ecosystem.

India – As part of its global strategy, the university launched its new campus in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City in Gandhinagar.

Ampito designed and deployed a secure and high-performance infrastructure to support the new facility. At the core of the solution was the implementation of next-generation firewalls using FortiGate 200G technology, supported by FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Enterprise Protection services. This provided advanced threat protection, global threat intelligence and continuous monitoring to protect sensitive university systems and data.

To support reliable campus connectivity, Ampito deployed enterprise switching and wireless infrastructure using Extreme Networks hardware, ensuring strong and secure network performance across the facility. End-user computing needs were addressed through the provisioning of workstation hardware from Dell Technologies.

Internet connectivity and installation services were delivered in collaboration with local partners including Tata Communications, enabling reliable regional connectivity while meeting local compliance requirements. Ampito also coordinated global procurement and acted as the Importer of Record for certain equipment shipments, simplifying customs processes and ensuring the timely delivery of hardware to the campus.

Following deployment, Ampito provides ongoing 24/7 managed device and infrastructure support to ensure the environment remains secure, monitored and fully operational.

At the GIFT City campus, the IT infrastructure was successfully deployed ahead of the facility’s launch in January 2026. This ensured that all systems were fully operational when the university welcomed its first cohort of 220 students.

The deployment has provided the new campus with secure protection for institutional systems and research data while delivering reliable connectivity for students and staff. Importantly, the infrastructure integrates seamlessly with the university’s global technology environment, ensuring that the university can maintain consistent security, performance and operational standards across locations.
